WIMAX DEPLOYMENT CASE STUDIES
Tuesday, October 11, 2006

3:30pm

Panel:
WiMAX in Emerging Countries

Moderator: Adlane Fellah, CEO/Founder, Maravedis

Panelists:

- Kevin Suitor, VP, Marketing and Business Development, Redline

- Dr. Alok Sharma PhD, CEO, Telsima

- Mauricio Coutinho, CEO, Neovia

- Lee Sparkman, President, Enforta

This session will address the specific market, and regulatory trends facing the broadband wireless industry in strategic emerging countries such as Russia, China, Brazil, India, etc.

These countries represent half of the world population and are striving economies. The success of WiMAX will highly depend on the adoption of the technology in those four countries with domino effect to neighboring countries.

What regulation is in place for BWA/WiMAX in those countries? Who are the likely service providers deploying WiMAX? In what timeframe? What are the challenges still ahead? What are the particularities that need to be addressed by equipment vendors to be successful in those countries? What are the market forecasts in each country?

The session will include representatives from 1 service provider of each country.

4:30pm

WIMAX: BECOMING A BROADBAND REALITY
Jeff Thompson, CEO, Towerstream

While experts still debate the viable penetration of WiMAX technology, fixed wireless providers such as Towerstream have been competing head to head with RBOCS in major metropolitan areas including New York City, Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles proving a growing demand for wireless broadband solutions. Lack of competition has led the RBOCs to provide poor customer service and inflated rates, while "competing" wireline broadband providers are simply reselling the RBOC services. Fixed wireless and "pre-WIMAX" solutions which completely bypass the RBOCs, not only offer better, more robust features, but substantially lower prices and more reliable customer service.

In addition, wireless broadband technology like WiMAX offers the ability to deliver advanced technology such as Voice over WiFi, which up until this point, could not really be considered a viable solution for both businesses and consumers.

The recent shift to fixed wireless broadband certainly validates the case for WiMAX and shows that it can and will thrive in any marketplace. Big industry forces such as Intel have already announced the development of WiMAX equipment and networks, and in this presentation, TowerStream will discuss new opportunities this technology holds for the future of broadband.

  • VOIP over WIMAX using QOS

  • Scalable bandwidth on demand

  • Customer service as a feature

  • Disaster Recovery

2:30pm

PANEL: WIMAX REGULATORY & SPECTRUM ISSUES: U.S. AND ABROAD
Moderator: Adlane Fellah, Senior Analyst, Maravedis

Panelists:

- Reynaldo Bustamante, Director General, Mexico Federal Telecommunications Commission

- Patrick Carrey, Director Terrestrial Engineering, Industry Canada

- Stagg Newman, McKinsey Advisor, Global Telecom Practices

One factor is more important than any other in deciding how big a role WiMAX, particularly in its mobile form, will play in global communications – and that factor is spectrum regulation. The more licensed and unlicensed bands that are opened up to WiMAX, especially with permission to run mobile services, the more impact the technology will have. There are several critical decisions to be made this year by key regulators about spectrum availability and usage, which are explained, together with the implications for WiMAX operators.

In addition, this panel will bring together key regulators from the US, Canada and Mexico to discuss the current government regulatory positions and potential implications for WiMAX and wireless broadband.

Among the key questions are:

  • Whether regulatory bodies will allow broadband wireless technologies into 3G spectrum,
  • Whether they will permit mobility in 3.5GHz bands, and
  • How valuable new bands such as the US’ 700MHz will be opened up.

This session examines these key issues as well as how the WiMAX community is working with national regulators and the International Telecommunications Union to move towards harmonization and a policy that will support WiMAX operators’ aims.

3:30

Wimax market reality after 1 year live
