WiMAX DEPLOYMENT GLOBAL map

Caroline Gabriel, Research Director, Rethink Research

Panelists:

- Jim Baker, CEO, Telabria

- Neil Parkinson, CEO, Irish Broadband

- Tzvika Friedman, CEO, Alvarion

Martin Bäckström, Director of GSM and WiMAX Radio Access networks, Ericsson AB

With an increasing number of commercial roll-outs of fixed and nomadic WiMAX services, and some early mobile activity, it is now possible to create a detailed picture of the key geographical trends and how WiMAX is being used in terms of applications, target markets, tariffs and business models. While it is emerging as an important tool for extending broadband access to underserved areas, some of the most important deployments show 802.16 being used to enhance another network’s value.

This session will outline the key characteristics of the WiMAX market at the end of 2006, including the impact of some recent decisions by major service providers and regulators about mobile broadband systems and spectrum. In light of these patterns and trends, there will be forecasts of how the deployment of WiMAX will accelerate and change from 2007 and the 802.16 carrier map that we will see by the end of the decade, with resulting impact for WiMAX and non-WiMAX operators and for the vendor community.

4:30pm

Delivering WiMAX-based Services Using D and E
Manish Gupta, VP, Aperto Networks

The imminent arrival of systems based on the 802.16e WiMAX variant, which will support mobility in future, has grabbed most of the attention from large vendors and carriers. Since the ‘e’ standard can operate in fixed and mobile mode, does this mean that 802.16-2004 is a dead end technology, and so what are the consequences for its adopters? And is there still significant business to be made in the fixed market at all? The speaker examines the case for fixed WiMAX and the markets where 802.16-2004 will thrive.

PANEL: INVESTING IN WIMAX, AN EXECUTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Moderator: Berge Ayvazian, Conference Co-Chair,
Chief Strategy Officer, Yankee Group

The flood of investment into WiMAX - whether by the financial community or service providers - has started more hesitantly than it did in Wi-Fi, because of the greater complexity of the technology. However, there is now rising interest and large sums of money will flow towards WiMAX from 2007. This panel takes a top level strategic overview of the key issues surrounding financial commitment to this emerging platform.

2:30pm

PANEL: Comparing Cost/Performance Benefits In WiMAX & 3G
Moderator: Philip Solis, Senior Analyst, ABI Research

Panelists:

- Markku Hollstrom, General Manager, Broadband Wireless Radio Networks, Nokia Networks

- Lars Johnsson, VP Business Development, Beceem

- Ronny Haraldsvik, VP Marketing, Qualcomm

- David McGrath, Motorola

One of the key cost factors in 3G has been the patent licensing fees attached to W-CDMA and CDMA2000 technologies, which are now increasingly the focus of legal and antitrust challenges. Achieving a virtually royalty-free consumer device was always a dream for the WiMAX community, as it would support a range of new business models, especially in developing economies.

This dream may be fading, but there is still a concerted effort to control patent costs in WiMAX, and there are other cost/performance benefits that WiMAX will deliver ahead of 3G, many connected to the flat IP network and the antenna-enhanced CPE. This session takes an objective view of how the technologies stack up in terms of the cost/performance ratio.

WIMAX AND THE MOBILE ENTERPRISE
Bettina Tratz-Ryan, Research Director, Gartner

The mobile enterprise is a major trend among large companies as they seek to support new working practices using mobile access. So far, the technologies to support this have come with concerns about security, cost, manageability and performance. In this panel, the representatives discuss whether WiMAX will be the solution to those problems, and what role it will take alongside other technologies in the mobilized corporation..
