TRACK 4:
European Hotzones, Digital Cities
and Municipal Broadband

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Chaired by Yankee Group

3:30pm
Berge Ayvazian
Conference Co-Chair
Chief Strategy Officer
Yankee Group
Roberta Wiggins
Research Fellow, Wireless/Mobile Technologies Decision Service
Yankee Group

Among the most exciting wireless markets of 2005 was the rapidly evolving municipal metrozone sector, with many city authorities looking to blanket large areas with wireless systems to support efficient operations, public safety, traffic management and low cost internet access. Early metrozones were heavily focused on Wi-Fi mesh but there is increasing interest in WiMAX, or WiMAX/Wi-Fi hybrids, for these deployments. The development of mobile broadband in European cities is unfolding differently than in the US.  This session examines the role WiMAX can play in municipal networks and the business case behind them.  This track includes an overview of the European market for Municipal Broadband and Digital City projects, and three panel discussions with the leading proponents and suppliers to these projects throughout Europe.
