TRACK 2: TECHNOLOGY TRACK

Tuesday - May 23, 2006

3:30pm

PANEL:
NETWORK PLANNING: THE KEY ISSUES FOR WIMAX

Moderator: Daryl Schoolar, Sr. Analyst, Networking Group, In-Stat

Panelists:

This session examines the key issues in planning a WiMAX network in order to create the most efficient system for delivering key applications. Critical planning factors from site acquisition to base station placement are considered for different terrains and services.

4:30pm

WIMAX AND OTHER
BROADBAND WIRELESS OPTIONS COMPARED

Håkan Djuphammar, VP Systems Management, Ericsson Research & Development, Ericsson AB

This discussion will focus on how WiMAX compares, in specific scenarios, with other broadband wireless data technologies such as UMTS TDD, Flash-OFDM, 802.20 and the next generation 3GPP platforms.

TRACK 2: TECHNOLOGY TRACK
 Wednesday - May 24, 2006

11:00am

THE EVOLUTION OF WIMAX DEVICES

Charles Riggle, VP Business Development, NextNet

One of the most critical elements in a successful uptake of WiMAX services will be the design of the end user devices, and there is an aggressive roadmap to create indoor fixed units, laptop cards and full-blown smartphones. On the technology front, what is the progress and functionality of two important classes of devices, indoor CPE and handsets?

2:30pm

WiMAX Deployment in Europe:
Unique Technical and Market Dynamics

Andrew Tang, Director of WiMAX European Solutions Development, Intel

European operators are enjoying commercial success with fixed WiMAX deployments. They are extending their services to areas underserved by traditional wired broadband technologies and doing it in a fast, flexible more cost-effective way. Now that the 802.16e-2005 standard has been approved, adding nomadic capabilities, what new usage model opportunities should European operators evaluate? Mr. Tang will discuss nomadicity and the value it brings to existing services as well as the opportunity to generate new revenue streams.

3:30pm

PANEL: CAN A SINGLE TECHNOLOGY SERVE
RURAL AND URBAN MARKETS?

Moderator: Phil Marshall, Sr. Analyst, Yankee Group

Panelists:

The challenges of creating networks and profitable services are very different for operators in rural markets, often with dispersed populations and obstacles such as trees, compared to those in the dense population and buildings of cities. This debate argues the pros and cons of WiMAX for both environments and looks at whether the system is equally applicable to all types of terrain.

4:30pm

PANEL: SMART ANTENNAS AND CHIPSETS EVOLUTION

Moderator: Stuart Carlaw, Principal Analyst, ABI Research

Panelists:

Developers of wireless technologies are always looking for techniques to boost range and data rate, and to make a system more robust even in difficult terrain and without line of sight. One of the most important examples in the next generation network world is the wide range of smart antenna mechanisms that can improve the performance of wireless systems, and two types have been specified for WiMAX – MIMO and beam forming.
